Premier Dental Care provides adult and children patients with fluoride treatment in Idaho Falls.Although fluoride treatments are commonly administered to children and adolescents, they can be helpful for adults as well. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral in food and water that has properties to help strengthen the enamel on your teeth. Because it works by remineralizing your teeth, fluoride helps build up a resistance to tooth decay. Because of this, at Premier Dental Care we want to encourage all of our patients to consider fluoride treatments to help promote strong, healthy enamel.

The Benefits of Fluoride Treatment

Anyone who practices good dental hygiene applies fluoride daily through their toothpaste and mouthwash at home. However, it is still recommended to have professional fluoride treatments applied to your teeth by your dentist every now and then. In addition to strengthening your enamel, some of the benefits of fluoride treatments include:

  • Helps prevent tooth decay
  • Fights bacteria that harm the gums and teeth
  • Restores minerals to the surface of the teeth
  • Prevents future cavities
  • Slows down and prevents root decay

Do Adults Need Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride treatments are most commonly used for children ages 6 to 16 because it helps lower the risk of developing cavities and promotes long-lasting dental health. However, fluoride treatments can benefit adults at any age and should be implemented in your dental care routine. If your dentist believes you are at risk of tooth decay, they may recommend a fluoride treatment. There are a number of conditions often found in adults that may benefit from fluoride treatment, including:

  • Dry mouth: Certain diseases, medications, and even radiation or chemotherapy can cause an excessively dry mouth. A lack of saliva can lead to a number of problems in the mouth, which is why fluoride can help prevent the effects of oncoming tooth decay.
  • A history of frequent cavities: Adults who are still prone to cavities are big contenders for fluoride treatments.
  • Gum disease: Because gingivitis can lead to tooth decay, fluoride treatments are recommended.
  • Dental crowns, bridges, or braces: Having this type of dental work can make your teeth more susceptible to trapped bacteria, and fluoride can help strengthen the hard-to-reach areas.

How do Fluoride Treatments Work?

During your appointment, your dentist will typically apply fluoride treatment in the form of a foam or gel inside a disposable tray. The tray will stay in your mouth for a few minutes, effectively completing the treatment. Another application method is by using a varnish directly onto the teeth.

Aftercare for fluoride treatments couldn’t be easier. You will simply be asked to refrain from eating or drinking anything for at least 30 minutes, allowing your teeth to properly absorb the fluoride. Like any medication, too much fluoride can cause a number of side effects, which is why treatments should always be done by a dentist.
